Fortunately, there are several different herbs that have been used for centuries to help relieve the symptoms of anxiety and calm you down. They are excellent for not only promoting a sense of calm but also for when you’re in the middle of an episode and need a quick fix to bring you back to normal.

  • Ashwagandha – Ashwagandha is often used to naturally balance hormones. In addition, it has been shown to help combat stress and make the effects more manageable. Many health food stores will carry ashwagandha capsules.
  • Chamomile – Chamomile has long been used as a dietary supplement and for its medicinal qualities. It works to treat a variety of issues such as anxiety, depression and insomnia. It is ideal when brewed into a tea, as it provides a calming feeling but doesn’t make you excessively groggy or tired.
  • Lavender – Lavender has a long history of being used for anxiety. It has been shown to help treat conditions such as panic attacks, irritability, restlessness, and tension. To treat anxiety, use lavender essential oil and a diffuser throughout the day. Additionally, placing a pouch of dried lavender under your pillow can help promote calmness and sleep.
  • Lemon Balm – Lemon balm is a herb from the mint family. It has calming properties and has been proven to be effective at reducing cortisol, elevating your mood and promoting relaxation. This makes it quite effective for dealing with anxiety. It works well when used as a tea, either dried or fresh.
  • Valerian – Valerian is an ingredient often used in teas marketed for nighttime. This is because it is great at helping you sleep. Additionally, it can lower your blood pressure and cortisol while helping to calm anxiety. It is available as a capsule but is also effective when used in tea.
