Grading System

Essay assignments and theses are evaluated on an A, B, C basis. Objective type tests are evaluated on the basis of a percentage of correct answers. On official transcripts, EIN translates all achievements into the A, B, C system, according to the following schedule. (EIN does not use the grade point system; however, grade point equivalents are also given below for purposes of comparison.)

A 90% Excellent 4.0 grade points
B+ 85% Very Good 3.5 grade points
B 80% Above Average 3.0 grade points
C+ 75% Acceptable 2.5 grade points
C 70% Average 2.0 grade points
D 60% Below Average 1.0 grade points
F   Fail 0.0 grade points

A grade of C or above is required for successful completion of all subjects in the core area (e.g., adjunct therapies, biology, chemistry, clinical studies, ecology, jurisprudence, nutrition, pathology, physiology, thesis). A grade of D or above is required for successful completion of general education subjects outside the core area (e.g., anthropology, history, psychology, statistics). Students who do not achieve successful completion grades in a given subject may, at EIN’s discretion, be allowed to repeat that subject, after having received constructive suggestions from a faculty advisor.

Note: To qualify for the RNCP designations issued by the Nutritional Consultants Organization of Canada (NCOC), students must obtain a grade of at least "B" in every subject in Levels I and II and in the final Level II exam.

Testing Procedures

Each subject in the EIN program is self-contained. It may include a textbook, videotape, audio tapes, notes, and/or a study aid. It will always include a test or essay assignment, which is to be completed at the student's convenience either sent by fax, email, or mail to EIN. There it is routed to a faculty member for grading and evaluation. (If sending by mail, keep a copy in case of loss.)

After successful completion of all subjects in the Certificate program (Level I) and the Practitioner program (Level II) each student must take and pass a final proctored examination. After the Masters program (Levels III & IV) the student must complete a thesis before the respective diploma will be awarded. There is no proctored exam for completion of the Masters program. The student is responsible for locating an appropriate proctor for this examination, subject to approval by EIN. The proctor must agree to (a) receive the examination, which will be sent in a sealed envelope, (b) supervise the examination on a date prearranged between candidate and proctor, (c) sign a letter verifying the identity of the candidate and recording the date on which the candidate completed the examination unaided by any other person, and (d) to insert the completed examination and signed letter into an envelope provided for this purpose, seal the envelope in the presence of the candidate, and return it to EIN within 24 hours.

Final examinations may be taken only after all course tests and assignments have been completed to EIN standards and all fees paid. EIN students are expected to observe a code of strict academic honesty.
